Wantage - My Home Town

Revisiting Wantage

Wantage in Oxfordshire is/was my home town. Born in the cottage hospital and educated in the local primary and grammar schools, I lived in the town for 20 years, from 1950 to 1970.

We live in the Scottish Highlands, so we’re visitors in Wantage. To be honest the towns in Scotland have a lot more going for them.

Whenever I visit these days I get a real kick out of taking a tour of all my old haunts. Here’s a video showing what the town centre is like in 2010.

It’s lost a lot of its charm and tradition. Everywhere you look now there’s cars and trash cans. There’s also ugly corporate branding, peeling paint, and holes in the road.

But King Alfred still watches over the Market Place and most of the pubs we used to drink in are still there,

I’m hoping one day the local council will start to do it’s job properly and return Wantage to its former glory,

Mind you, I won’t be holding my breath.
